Taught in Italian, Degree in “Industrial Engineering”, III Year, spring semester. (54 hours, 6 CFU)

The course aims to provide students with knowledge concerning the durability and degradation properties of different materials (building and stone materials, polymeric materials, coatings, wood, etc.), in relation to their composition and characteristics as well as to the service conditions. The mechanisms of degradation that take place in materials will be introduced, in particular due to the transport of matter within them (presence and transport of water/moisture in materials). Methods and techniques for measuring the degradation taking place in different materials will be illustrated, with the description of the analyses to assess the transport properties that influence the durability of the same materials. A large part of the course will be devoted to laboratory experiences, with the execution of some of the described tests, the identification of the test parameters and the analysis of the results. It will also be illustrated how a report of the tests carried out must be drawn up, supplying some examples.
